WATER HEATER - WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A HOMEOWNER

The most common problems homeowners have with their water heater is that the pilot light may go out.  Several things can cause this.

A.      Down draft on the water heater and furnace flue, because of the wind.

             B.       Low gas pressure due to improper setting of gas on the gas regulator on the main gas line by furnace.

             C.       Water condensing on water heater burner and knocking out pilot.

1.   Notify your heating contractor to check the flue heights.  If it is to low, you can get a down draft and the heating contractor         may have to extend the flue higher on the roof.

2.   Notify your heating contractor to check the gas pressure on the regulator to make sure its set properly.

3.   DO NOT drain your hot water heater of all its hot water at any given time, this will cause condensation in the internal flue of the        water heater and the water will drop on the hot burner and may knock out the pilot.  If you are having problems with draining         your heater of all its hot water, turn the water heater thermostat up to one notch below the hot mark.

FLUSHING HOT WATER HEATER

It is not necessary to flush your hot water heater.  Most new heaters have turbulator in them to keep sediment suspended so it passes through the water heater.
